Loaves & Fishes Family Kitchen is committed to providing no cost, hot nutritious meals and support services in a dignified, safe and caring environment. We provide services to all needy individuals, with special concern for families, senior citizens and homeless. Loaves & Fishes was founded in 1980 to fill a void in the community for these special populations. Our kitchens now serve meals five days each week at three locations. The number of guests has grown from the initial 11 served on February 15, 1980, to over 200 per meal. Loaves & Fishes Family Kitchen does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, ethnic origin, religion, gender, age, handicap or sexual orientation.

Loaves & Fishes provides:

  • No cost hot meals in San Jose Monday through Friday at Catholic Charities' Eastside Neighborhood Center; Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday at InnVision's Montgomery Street Inn; and, Wednesdays and Fridays at St. Maria Goretti Kitchen itargeting families, seniors, single women, couples, and the disabled.

  • Community Services to better serve the needs of our guests and to provide extensive information and referral services. We provide emergency outreach assistance, infant care supplies, and information and referrals for additional services.

  • Extensive Holiday Programs including Senior Brunch, Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas when we offer pictures with Santa Claus and "shopping days" for parents to take gifts home for their children.

Martha’s Kitchen Hours of Operation:

  • Tuesday and Wednesday: Meal Service: 4:00pp - 5:00pm

Nestled between downtown San Jose and the quaint town of Willow Glen lies a “little soup kitchen” that will turn 30 in 2011. Founder Louise Benson began this work out of her garage when she prepared and gave away peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the poor. Then in 1981, she and her friends started Martha’s Kitchen on the premises of the Sacred Heart Church serving hot meals. The kitchen was named after a biblical figure, Martha, who unfailingly offered hot meals to Jesus and his band of followers on their frequent journeys through the community of Bethany.

Today, this “little soup kitchen” is not so little anymore.  It still gives out hot meals onsite with its mission to “feed the hungry with dignity, no questions asked, no judgment made.”  And its meals are hot and complete with soup, salad, roll, starch, a main dish, fruit and dessert.  It also sends out 160,000 hot and cold meals annually to a dozen other non-profit organizations in Santa Clara county as far south as Gilroy, and even to the dusty agricultural town of Dos Palos in Merced county to support the hungry. Before the end of 2010 it will serve its 2,000,000th meal since it has grown to an annual production of 200,000 meals. The “little soup kitchen that could” has proven it certainly could run an efficient kitchen with a lean staff of 6 employees which includes the Executive Director/Development Director, Operations Manager, two cooks and two kitchen help.  Edita Cruz, Executive Directors forecasts that Martha’s Kitchen will prepare its next 1,000,000 meals in as little as five years.
